A revolutionary potential.
Jesus is about building time-tested leaders that will shake the earth with their faith. Jesus modeled this with His words and His life. Beyond classrooms and exams, Jesus is calling us to step up as leaders…to love, serve, and minister like He did. This is a revolutionary movement that will train and equip leaders to become the living Word. In Mandate, you will develop within a community of like-hearted people that will become your allies in completing Jesus’ Great Commission. You will be grafted into a network of seasoned, devoted, and sincere missionaries, pastors, and church planters ready to pour out wisdom and counsel. In Mandate, you will be challenged, pressed, refined, filled, and loved.

God very unexpectedly dropped into my thoughts in my late 20s the understanding that developing followers has valuable results, but developing leaders takes similar commitment, yet has far more influence. Jesus developed disciples who became leaders. Discerning this as God’s calling, I have passionately taken many opportunities to develop leaders for church planting, pastoring, missions, etc. according to their God-given design. Being on the leadership team of Mandate is the highpoint of my life as we develop pre-deployment leaders with the best approach I have ever experienced.
Laying a foundation for Spirit-formed leadership development, I earned a B.A. degree in biblical studies from Oral Roberts University (1980), and then a Master of Divinity degree (1982) and a Doctor of Ministry degree (2002) from Fuller Seminary. During the latter, I ran eight marathons and married Karen (Walner). We have two sons, Matthew (age 20) and Michael (age 18).
Focusing on leadership development, I served Foursquare Missions as the director of the LIFE Bible College of West Africa in Lagos, Nigeria from 1984 to 1987 and then served as the regional overseer of Foursquare Churches in Africa for the ensuing five years. Following this, I became a professor at Life Pacific College (now University) in San Dimas, CA and continued teaching there for 14 years. During the second year I planted a leadership-development church that later became Glendora Foursquare Church in Glendora, CA. The church continues today, served by its third pastor.
Following this, I served as the Pastor of Discipleship at Mill Creek Foursquare Church in Washington (2007-2011), as the lead pastor of the Foursquare church in Crescent City, CA (2011-2014), establishing institutes and mentoring at both of these churches. I then served at Canby Foursquare Church as the Pastor of Adult Discipleship and then as the Interim Academic Dean of Canby Bible College until 2020. I now adventurously serve as the Mentoring Director of Mandate.
